Our group scene has finally done today. I really enjoy the process of working with my group mates.

It was totally different from an individual work. In an individual work, I am not really communicate with others. The only thing I did a lot on individual work is to see my video over and over and discuss with myself to see which one I want. But in a group project, we have to work with others, which means we have to respect others suggestion. Sometimes if we have conflicts, we need to try both way to see which one is better. This causes the lack of time. We only have class time to practice and discuss this scene because there is no way for us to stay together after school. This make our time usually valuable. If I am going to perform a monologue, I have tons of time to practice after school.

It was hard at our very beginning, then became easier later. This is a 11 minutes long scene, I have tons of lines compare to my monologue. At first I need to read all the time, but later it became my own words. The hardest point of this I think is the speaking. I have to make the sound loud enough that everybody in the black box can hear but I need to be sad and depressed. Also, another hard thing is the line connections with others. At first, we need to take two or three seconds to realize that the other person is finished her line and it is the time for me to speak. Later, we used signals to remind that we are finished and let next person speak. Also, the stage movements were always inappropriate( I moved 2 steps further or closer when I tried to leave every time). We tried to convince our audiences that when we were sitting there, we were not only sitting there but also being sad and thinking about our friends or families.

My final performance had several difference compares to our last rehearsal. In the last rehearsal, I slam the table then stand up and argue with Allie. But in the final draft I did not slam the table, I stood up straight and fast. First is because the height of the table is too low so it makes me looks really unnatural when I try to slam on it. Furthermore, it was really hard to control when to slam the table just on the point that Allie finishes her line. Also, I adjust my pace when I was leaving because I think if I go so fast Nicole will fail to stop in the middle of the stage so I was not so fast compare to the last rehearsal. These changes make improvements on the scene. However, there are something that I still need to work on. I do not think my facial expression was good. Sometimes I do not even know what mood should I express. Also, my tone was weird at some point which could be confusing.

Anyway, I really enjoy to work with my partners. They put all their passion when they are working. Thanks to Janna and Helen. Following is the link of our video.

Summary for technical theatre

Despite of the multiple aspects of the theater tech, I have realized several “core” of a good technical theatre. After watching the Hamlets and other productions, I found that you can have different vision so different designs will work for different productions. However, there is something does not change, which I see as a key point to make designs work—contrast. Light and dark, cool and warm, black and white, wealth and poverty. The contrast between elements always help the designer to establish settings effectively. If you have ordinary people on the stage dress in one color, you will have the protagonist dresses another color; if you have the surrounding dark, you will light up the character’s face; if you have a slow music at a lovely scene, you will have strong music on a ghost scene later.  Another thing I consider as another key point do set up good theatre techs is the symbolism. Theatre tech enhance the scene while symbolism works the same way. Putting some desig...

Proposal for the director’s notebook

My play for my director’s notebook is Caucasian Chalk Circle. It is a Brecht play and I love Brecht style. CA has finished this production last fall, but I am not satisfied with that production after I learned more about Brecht and his style. In this project, I don’t have the limitation that a high school theatre has so I can achieve my “epic theatre”. I will mostly follow Brecht style when doing this project.  Before I start to working on everything, I will read my Caucasian Chalk Circle again and read another biography of Brecht during the summer, so I will know more about Brecht and his idea of “epic” theatre and more about his techniques. After that, I plan to watch 2 or 3 production of Caucasian Chalk Circle and one of them will be Brecht’s production. I believe during the summer and next semester I will have new chances to know more about theatre techniques, and I will mostly use technologies to show how is an “epic’ theatre looks like.  From technical aspects, ...
