First draft

Today I want to talk about Il Docttore in Commedia dell’Arte. Commedia dell’Arte means comedy of manners. And it was a type of professional theater originated from Italy, 16th century. It was a form of theater that focuses on satire of social manners.  Though most of the sources and researches say that Commedia dell’Arte was born around 1500s in Italy, nobody really knows its true dates and origin. Even though there is no way to find its origin, there are still a lot of similarities between Commedia dell’Arte and the early theatre in Roman Empire. For example, the Atellan Farces, which was short scenes of comedy with types of characters wearing masks. Different from other theaters in that time, Commedia dell’Arte did not only please upper class people but mostly served as a cultural entertainment for common people. So, Commedia dell’Arte performers usually build their temporary stage outdoor and start the performance with a rough outline of the plot. Many details and stingers ...

presentations reflect

In class , we watched several cool presentation videos of theater traditions by IB students. We graded them and we compared our grades to the IB grades which were very close. So I think I am confident about my project. However, there are several points need to clarify about how to make a good theater tradition project. At first, the Korean girl’s video is my favorite. Though she did not use many hard terms and professional terms, she still got an excellent grade on theater process and presenting theater. All the critical victory points of her presentation were the organization and structure. Her powerpoint was relatively simple and she notified audience every time she entered the next part of her presentation. On the other hand, she followed the order on the guidebook which was very good but what she did different than many of other presenters was that she explained the moment of theater by divided it into several parts then went over the whole procedure. If she acts out the whol...

direction of research

Though originally I had three nominees for my project, after roughly looked up for their resources, I decided let comedia dell’arte to be my subject of project.  I kicked Punch and Judy out of my waitlist since last time we watched the sample video of a IB student together. He explained Punch and Judy throughly and clearly so I felt like I don’t have anything I want to do a further research in Punch and Judy. Though many IB students have done the research on that before, there are still a lot of it to discover. It was the ancestor of modern western comedy. In fact, many of its term’s history can trace back to Ancient Rome Many customs of its we still can see them today everywhere in our art production. Also, another reason for me to pick it is that compares to Karagoz Hacivat puppetry and Punch and Judy, it has more resources online where I can easily find. I looked up for Karagoz Hacivat puppetry, only a few websites had introduction and analysis that I can look up as a r...

traditions reflect

At the beginning of the week, we were asked to research world theater traditions in order to do a IB project. In the long list of available theater traditions, I picked 3 of them as my favorite: commedia dell’arte, karagoz puppetry and Punch and Judy puppetry.  Commedia dell’arte means comedy of the profession and it was a kind of early professional comedy theater originated from Italy with stock characters and masks. It makes fun on social stereotypes so stock characters have their own ways of doing things. In the most interesting thing in Commedia dell’Arte is the specific movements of stock characters. When I looked up the characters movement in Commedia dell’Arte, what surprised me was the movements of the stock characters are almost exact the same as the movements of characters in modern theater and film. For example, the old man in Commedia dell’Arte always bend his back, stretch his neck and walk with small steps with old man’s stoop while looking around. This specific ...
