Julie Taymor research

Julia Taymor, a great theater, opera and film director, famous for that she is the first female broadway musical director awarded by Tony Awards, talks about her theater experience and idea. She told a story when she was in Indonesia when she was in her early 20s. She was impressed by some old people dancing in night only for showing faith to their god. Then a young man walked out hanged a lantern on the tree that it turn out to be a all night performance with hundreds people watching. She saw this night as a seminal moment of her theater life that she should seek for the original idea of herself but also aware that audiences are in presence every seconds and they need the light. Then she used her production musical the Lion King as an example to show how she work through that idea. She mentioned the use of circle as a symbol throughout the whole story. She left the space of imagination to her audience, that is how she do what she mean by be true to your production also give the aud...

Semester Reflect

Time passes so fast, its November now, which means I have been study theater for almost 3 months. As I know more about theatre, I recognized that theatre is not only practice acting skill, but also a growth of reading and analyzing. I can remember our first project was 2 monologue--one written by ourselves and the other we acted out. That was my first time to understand how nature of the character is important to some actors. Also I learned a important way to improve myself--film ourselves and play the video over to see where can improve. Meanwhile, we went to the Romeo and Juliet Edgerton Park in New Haven. That was the first play I watched with study purpose. However, back to that time, I know little about theater so I did not do a good review on that play. We started Stanilavski chapter after the monologue project. In that chapter, we did a lot of Stanilavski exercises to experience our character as someone like us. We were asked to read and understand the characters. We us...

Actors list: Grusha Vashnadze--Samantha Weed, Azdak--Peter Deng, The singer--Amalia Gutierrez, Simon Shashava--Aaron Luo, Shalva/Ludovico/1st lawyer--David Mathisson, Natella Abashwili/corporal--Linda Li, Georgi Abashwili--Jason Lin, Prince Kazbeki/2nd lawyer--Erin King, Shauwa/peasant--Zoe Genden, Ironshirt/maid/doctor--Helen Zheng, maid/mother-in-law--Keystal Charter. It was so good to see classmates and friends acting such a masterpiece and it was inspiring. The Caucasian Chalk Circle is a play inside another play. The story happens right after the world war 2, 2 kolchos are arguing for the ownership of a valley. The fruit kolchos cultivates the valley during the war time while the original owner goat kolchos runs away. As a result, the fruit kolchos invites a singer with all the kolchos...

sign scene refflection

In this sign scene, we used 4 signs. 2 of them are double sided. These 3 signs are: "cottage" and "what is the woman afraid of", "in the bloodiest time, there are still good people" and "mother", "losing the baby" and "resiponsibility desperation courage". The one sided sign is "lie or truth". We picked these contents for purpose. Cottage was to inform the story is taking place in the peasant's cottage, the other side was to make audience think about why the woman was worrying. "in the bllodiest time, there are still good people" sign was to start our scene with a overall theme and the other side was to inform that when Grusha picked up the child and ran away was when Grusha truly became the mother of the child. "losing the baby" was to set up a dangerous situation which the corporal was to ran off the baby(make up our deficiency of number of people); "responsibility desperation courage...
