In this sign scene, we used 4 signs. 2 of them are double sided. These 3 signs are: "cottage" and "what is the woman afraid of", "in the bloodiest time, there are still good people" and "mother", "losing the baby" and "resiponsibility desperation courage". The one sided sign is "lie or truth". We picked these contents for purpose. Cottage was to inform the story is taking place in the peasant's cottage, the other side was to make audience think about why the woman was worrying. "in the bllodiest time, there are still good people" sign was to start our scene with a overall theme and the other side was to inform that when Grusha picked up the child and ran away was when Grusha truly became the mother of the child. "losing the baby" was to set up a dangerous situation which the corporal was to ran off the baby(make up our deficiency of number of people); "responsibility desperation courage" was to tell the audience what inspired Grusha to protect the baby.
In fact, some of the signs worked but some of them did not. Cottage sign did not give our an ideal effect, it was mostly "the other side" of "what is the woman afraid of". That was only a repetitive message because the concept of where the story took place had been act out by us. Though the other side of this sign worked well. In Brecht's theory, he wanted people notice social problem in his play. This sign, revealed the fragility of trust between people during war time and the cowardness of common people when involving taking huge responsibility. That "in the bloodiest time, there are still good people" sign worked well, too. We wanted audience to acknowledge what this scene wanted to express, so we chose it to be the beggining sign as a hint. "mother" symbolized the original content of the book, that worked well, too. "losing the baby" seemed not so necessary if we had enough actors to act as soldiers to actualize the harzard of the baby being killed. Mostly that was only "the other side" of "responsibility desperation courage". "responsibility desperation courage" was great; it established a contrast between the positive humanity of Grusha and negative humanity of the peasant woman. The good contrast between humanity also served Brecht's purpose: reflect social reality. The "truth or lie" sign made a suspicious attitude for Grusha facing to the woman's response. In conclusion, some of the signs did served Brechtian purpose well and some of them was just for complete their mission such as being carried to the center of the stage or as a cover of the other side of the sign.
3 of 5 worked well in the scene, if I have a chance to refilm the scene, I would like to change the "losing the baby" into "greedy and lust" to stress the dirty and rudeness of low class soilders. Those signs that did work well did worked bad, they served other purpose which is unavoidable in the situation of 3 people.
