Though originally I had three nominees for my project, after roughly looked up for their resources, I decided let comedia dell’arte to be my subject of project.
I kicked Punch and Judy out of my waitlist since last time we watched the sample video of a IB student together. He explained Punch and Judy throughly and clearly so I felt like I don’t have anything I want to do a further research in Punch and Judy.
Though many IB students have done the research on that before, there are still a lot of it to discover. It was the ancestor of modern western comedy. In fact, many of its term’s history can trace back to Ancient Rome Many customs of its we still can see them today everywhere in our art production. Also, another reason for me to pick it is that compares to Karagoz Hacivat puppetry and Punch and Judy, it has more resources online where I can easily find. I looked up for Karagoz Hacivat puppetry, only a few websites had introduction and analysis that I can look up as a reference. Nevertheless, when I looked up for commedia dell’arte, thousands of authorized resources jumped out such like the National theater and the metropolitan museum of art. That means under the same limitation of time, I can look up more resources for commedia dell’arte compares to the Turkish shadow puppetry.
What I really interested in is its attribute of stock characters. Personally, I think this attribute allow the play writes to play around the characters which make the comedy like a game with some certain set up and some uncertainty. On the other hand, Commedia dell’Arte is also an improvised production which depends on actors ability to make up the atmosphere of the script. My current understanding of commedia dell’arte is that is a system of comedy with constant elements which unlike many theater traditions whose productions are most likely to be separate works which have little relationship and comparison can be made. What I probably want to research in commedia dell’arte would be the comparisons of movements and costumes between the masters.
