CCC notes scene4-6

After the long journey Grusha arrives at his brother's house.She finds a shelter for a short time. However, his coward brother and selfish sister-in-law refuse to keep them after 6 months. Her brother buys her a dying husband in order to find a place for her. Nevertheless, the husband is pretending dying so he could aviod military service and he treats and asks Grusha as his real wife. Several months later, Simon comes and discovers his fiancee is married. He leaves without listen to any further explaination. Michael also has been take by soldiers who are helping Natalle gets her child. When the unfortunate woman enters the city with soldiers, what waiting for her is judge Azdak.

Azdak was a clerk in town. He was an indolent man but never did something really bad. He had the sympathy of the weak. He found a beggar on the day of revolt. He discovered that the beggar was the Duke after the Duke fleed away. He surrendered himself to the police of guilty of let the Duke flee away. But the judical system had already fall into disorder because of the revolt. The fat prince pardoned Azdak and he wanted his nephew to be the new judge. To maintain the stability of the situation, Azdak acted as defendant. However, his words made the revolters had nothing to say. The soldiers drove the nephew out of the stage and let Azdak be the judge.

When the riot is over, Azdak can no longer hold his position well. Just as people about to abuse him, the Duke's order of let Azdak be the judge arrives in the return of saving his life. So the case of Grusha will be judge by him.He uses the old method of Chalk Circle to decide and he decide that the child should belongs to Grusha. Meanwhile, there is an old couple who are here to divorce. Azdak, claims the divorce and writes the case as Grusha and her husband's case so Grusha can get away from the marriage. After the case, Azdak disappears. The singer concludes that the valley should belong to the fruit kolcho.

Summary for technical theatre

Despite of the multiple aspects of the theater tech, I have realized several “core” of a good technical theatre. After watching the Hamlets and other productions, I found that you can have different vision so different designs will work for different productions. However, there is something does not change, which I see as a key point to make designs work—contrast. Light and dark, cool and warm, black and white, wealth and poverty. The contrast between elements always help the designer to establish settings effectively. If you have ordinary people on the stage dress in one color, you will have the protagonist dresses another color; if you have the surrounding dark, you will light up the character’s face; if you have a slow music at a lovely scene, you will have strong music on a ghost scene later.  Another thing I consider as another key point do set up good theatre techs is the symbolism. Proposal for the director’s notebook

My play for my director’s notebook is Caucasian Chalk Circle. It is a Brecht play and I love Brecht style. CA has finished this production last fall, but I am not satisfied with that production after I learned more about Brecht and his style. In this project, I don’t have the limitation that a high school theatre has so I can achieve my “epic theatre”. I will mostly follow Brecht style when doing this project.  Before I start to working on everything, I will read my Caucasian Chalk Circle again and read another biography of Brecht during the summer, so I will know more about Brecht and his idea of “epic” theatre and more about his techniques. After that, I plan to watch 2 or 3 production of Caucasian Chalk Circle and one of them will be Brecht’s production. I believe during the summer and next semester I will have new chances to know more about theatre techniques, and I will mostly use technologies to show how is an “epic’ theatre looks like.  From technical aspects, ...
