After today's self-study I have 3 new facts about Stanislavski and his method. The first one is his system is more about acting experience but not the skills. In this way, the system not only ask the actors to do exercises but also spend a lot of attention on get use to act which means there should not be gap between an actor's daily life and on stage performance. The second fact I discovered is that his method is more about principles than specific approaches. He said himself:" Create your own method! Don't depend slavishily on mine!Make up something that will work for you! But keep breaking traditions, I beg you." and "what is important to me is not the truth outside myself but the truth inside my self". As a result, I think when we are studying about him and his methods, we should work on experienceing, creating and exploring rather than memorizing. The third thing is he required students treat their characters as real people. He hope us to jump out of the box of the lines and guess and listen to the character. Use given circumstances and settings to portray the character by actors themselves.

Video 3:Rosie's solo (1) Rosie- IB solo performance (Elizabeth LaCompte) - YouTube

Basically I watched 3 solo performances of students studying Stanislavski. The first one Katherine acts as a wife who thinks she lost her husband's love and complains during her husband is out. The second is about a girl who has been betrayed by her husband and drinking and complaining. The third is about a drug addict telling her own story and try to warn people the harm of using drugs. These performances are really different from traditional operas and plays which use exaggerated movements and voices. I can notice that the actors' voice volume is only a little bit louder than their normal volume and only become really loud when their mood burst out. Also, the movements, gestures they use are erally normal whichi means we use all these in our daily life. No wonder why their performances are so natural. I really like the video 3, in the scene, Rosie uses the TV behind her to play music, video. It not only help her to keep in her own pace but also help the audiences understand the dark atom sphere of the scene. Here is a short conclusion of what I have learn from the video: do what you think teh character would do, say what you think the character really want to say, use some other objects to build the atom sphere and background knowledge, remember what the character want.
